Hold the Bond, I’ll Take More Booth Please [Guest Post]
Wendy Young lives in Louisville, TN. She’s one of the fans Bones picked up during the strike hiatus, actually. She started watching on Hulu in early 2008 and quickly watched everything they had to offer, then bought the S1 and S2 DVD sets. The show completely hooked her and she’s seen every episode more than once. As for work, I she’s a Jill-of-all-trades at an engineering firm. Wendy writes her own blog, http://obsessedwithbones.blogspot.com/
Love ‘em and leave ‘em leave you cold? Tired of regretless perfection and limitless knowledge? Want a touchable realism to your hero? Then Booth is your guy.
Maybe it’s just the current Bones British mania that has me singling out Mr. Bond, but countless other heroes follow the same pattern. You first must find a tall, handsome, usually dark man, and throw in mastery of everything physical and most things mental. You see him loving a new woman each time he appears. You see nothing of his emotional and mental state unless it involves anger or vengeance. He’s smarter, stronger, and better at everything than everyone else and he answers to no one.
Booth is a bit different. Of course, with David Boreanaz you get the tall, dark and handsome as part of the package but in Booth you also get facets that most ‘heroes’ would never dare admit. With Booth you get the guts, gut instinct and physicality of the classics. But he respects women, shows heart and hurt, screws up, and shows his weaknesses like, well…a man. He’s beaten, he’s flawed, he’s protective and he’s often wrong. He doesn’t have all the answers. He can’t get himself out of everything. He needs others. He can’t solve every puzzle alone, though he’d like to, and he’s not afraid to say things like “I don’t know” and “that’s going to hurt”.
He’s also not afraid to stand up for what’s right, defend those he cares about, take care of those who need it and give a little kindness to those without. We need more heroes like Booth about.
