Eric Millegan Explains to Us All

May 20, 2008 by Lynn

Eric MilleganI know, we’re all still in shock aout last night’s season finale. Just now, I got an email from Eric Millegan that tells us how he feels about leaving the regular cast of the show. I won’t paraphrase. Here’s what he says:

Okay. If you’ve seen the season finale, you’ve found out what I found out two months ago. I will no longer be a series regular on “Bones.” Creatively, they decided to carry out this storyline in which my character, Zack, was the apprentice to the Gormogon serial killer. The storyline landed Zack in a psychiatric facility and so he is no longer working at the Jeffersonian. This wasn’t my choice, but I embraced the challenge as an actor.

Over the last two months, I have been auditioning for some very interesting projects and I will keep you informed as to how it all goes. I’m also planning on bringing my cabaret show to NYC before the year is over. Once the date is set, I will let you know. I want to apologize to all of you for the times, over the last two months, in which I’ve had to be vague about still working on the show. I know that I told TV Guide that no one was leaving the show and well, you never know, my character is alive and there’s always the chance that he could return. Maybe they’ll have to visit Zack to help solve a case! I couldn’t tell you the whole truth because I was sworn to secrecy by the producers to tell no one about my leaving the show until now. I hated not being able to tell you (it really really s ucked) but well, unfortunately, it was my job to keep the secret.

There you go. I will really miss being on the show and I will really miss working with my friends David, Emily, Michaela, TJ, John, Tamara, Patricia and company. I loved working with Hart Hanson, Stephen Nathan, Barry Josephson and all the other producers, writers, and directors. I enjoyed working with the crew and it was an honor to be a member of the FOX family for 3 years. Finally, thank you for your continued support.

Namaste,
Eric Millegan

*sniff!* sniff!* How sad…. We’ll miss him on the show!!

I’m really sad to hear that Zach will be gone from the show — it’s very likely that Season 3 of Bones will be the last one I purchase.
At first I thought maybe it was his choice to leave — and I could have gone on with that, but now knowing it wasn’t his choice to leave I’m afraid I have to become like Hodgins, in that I see this as a conspiracy to get rid of Eric. I don’t know if I’ll even try to give the show a chance in season 4.

I’ve been looking for a place to protest cutting Zach’s characterFor me it wasn’t just Brennan and Booth but the entire cast that made the show so great.I think this decision was a very bad one and will deminish the enjoyment. How could you possibly choose Brennan’s father (who was actually better as non-present, on going, un-resolved issue in Brennan’s life) over Zach?Zach added such great humor and interractions and Eric played him brilliantly.Major disappointmet and a serious error in judgement!

  4. jade says:

Zach turning up as the apprentice just didn’t make sense to me. Even if he accepted the logic that supposedly persuaded him that the members of the secret societies needed to be killed, I can’t understand how he would accept the Gormogon’s methods as rational. How do cannibalism and corpse sculptures contribute to the cause? It just doesn’t make sense.

As another complaint, the timing seems contradictory. He supposedly gave Gormogon the information to find the lobbyist, and yet the old apprentice (who was killed so that Gormogon could recruit Zach) was the one who killed the lobbyist.

It’s funny how three great seasons could completely jump the shark so quickly. First with Brennen going against her character to get her father out of prison, and then with Zach becoming a cannibalistic serial killer.
It smells slightly of Buffy and Angel where the writers get bored with the characters and decide to add some unbelievable conflict.
The great thing about Bones was the believability of the characters and story…except maybe for the holographic projector. I haven’t started watching season 4, so I’m hoping there aren’t any anti-gravity units. Perhaps Hodgins becomes a werewolf? No…don’t tell me.

  6. xanadude says:

…if Gormagon was killing and eating members from secret societies, then why was he killing people from The Knights of Columbus? They were a society put together by the Catholic Church as an alternative to secret societies.
It’s as if the writers were watching a special on secret societies, grabbed a sandwich during the middle, and came in just in time to hear the name “The Knights of Columbus” out of context.

  7. Fred Dunn says:

Big mistake. I, too, thought that Zack had gone undercover for the FBI when the season ended only to be crushed to learn he was booted off. Big mistake. He may not have been the MAIN character but it was like MASH losing Radar, never the same (e.g. as good) again.

  8. Avery says:

I don’t think Bones is the same without “Zack”. He was the comedy in the show.

  9. Marggie says:

Okay, jackass’ bring back Zack!!! He is a big part of the cast. Bring back the first boss and the fun bartender. Fans demand it!! BRING BACK ZACK!!!!!!!

  10. C. Jackson says:

I just do not believe you have done away with Zak he is one of the main characters, and I never miss a Bones episode, this is entirely one of the greatest mistakes taken by anyone in television history, unbelievable, you must and I repeat “YOU MUST BRING BACK ZAK”, I watch all the shows, I even watch each one over again, and I get them thru netflicks, I can not get enough of Bones, but with out all the original stars that is STARS, it just won’t be the same….BRING BACK ZAK NOW……

  11. Anna says:

this sucks. Eric plays Zack so well, and some of the things that were implied on the show that Zack didn’t get(as in sarcasim, facial ques, ect.) was funny, and now without his character, the show looses intrest, and i really don’t see the point of getting rid of Zack. you might as well put them all on a reality show to get voted off, because if this is what they are going to do to the show, then i will stop watching. simple as that.

And also what the crap is this about Zack being “Gormagon’s student”??? that is just plain stupid.

  12. kv says:

i know i’m a little late, but i still must say i agree with a lot over here–and disagree with a few. im sure Bones is still Bones without Zack because, well, Bones is Temperance Brennan, but without Zacks’s character–the intensely loveable brainiac–i think it changes the perspective in which the “squints” approach things, at least for me. i mightve lost some initiative to watch season 4 (as i only watch on dvd). im even a little discouraged to watch the extra episodes on the season 3 dvd. so buying future dvd’s might be off the list as well. i understand they needed to shake things up, but that was a bit jarring i think, esp for Addy fans. i seriously lost a lot of the desire to keep watching. so i think i can concur in it being called a slight error in judgment. the whole cast as a whole was brilliant. i feel it disabled without one. even as Cam said in one of the episodes, “Who am I to break a family?” Well, they just did.

from Robert above, AND I COMPLETELY AGREE. I think it was a horrible move.

Bring back Zack, not only was he a “Deus ex Machina” figure to explain solutions to convoluted connections, he was also comic relief. I watched all the old shows on a marathon and the replacement characters were no where near as sympathetic. The constant change didn’t have the impact it did on say, Murphy Brown where it was an ongoing joke and not a material part of the story. Zack often provided a quick ending so the action could continue further into the show.

Oh yeah, and one more thing…BRING BACK ZACH!

  16. Trudy says:

I was so upset when I found out that Zack would no longer be part of the Bones family. This season, so far, is terrible. My husband & I were avid Bones watchers, but now we don’t care if we see it or not. The last two shows, we have switched off because they are so far fetched & Bones is really into herself this season. It’s just not an enjoyable show anymore. GET BACK TO THE ORIGINAL BONES THAT MADE IT SO POPULAR, WHICH INCLUDES BRINGING BACK ZACK!!!!!!!!!

  17. Candy (subscribed) says:

I am not English am the national person, therefore I use translator the software to translate my message, we have many people in Taiwan to watch BONES we to like Zack this role very much, initially he left when lets us be startled very much, we in have hoped for Zack one day to return to this play, when he when the fourth season fifth level will appear, we will be very happy, thought that this will be Zack returns to play’s laying out, but already the fifth season, Zack had not come back now, will let us think he will come back opportunity getting smaller, but we will also feel to such situation disappointed, because we thought that Zack is this team’s one, was short him probably to be short anything, but in the present play’s character gradually also very little mentioned Zack, probably he has not existed
