Bones Recap: “The Boy in the Shroud”
September 13, 2006 by Arieanna
Episode Name: The Boy in the Shroud (aka The Girl on the Run) [Read Spoiler][Photography]
Episode Number: 2.03
Air Date: September 13, 2006
Garbage. That’s our opening scene.
An overturned garbage truck. So, why is the Jeffersonian team there? Well, what’s in the garbage? Why, a body of course. Looks like it smells just pleasant. The garbage, that is. Well, likely the body too.
The body has been decomposing for about three weeks. A male minor. Broken neck and shattered femur. Congruent with a fall. The boy’s hand is gripping something. Not sure what yet.
So, the crime scene? The entire garbage truck needs to be looked at. Looks like fun.
Back at the Jeffersonian. Glass on the body. Lots of contusions. Also congruent with a fall from 50 feet. They make the assumption that the boy is a junkie or hustler, but there are no track marks. Did we not learn that assumptions are bad in the last episode?
The body was wrapped in a fabric. A shroud. His features are printed on the shroud. Nice religious reference there. Angela, who is displaying this information, calls it "The shroud of Montenegro." Angela was able to grab facial features from the shroud and fill in colors. The resulting image does not look like a street kid.
Facial reconstruction being run through the missing and exploited kids database. Having run through runaways, street kids, foster system to narrow the system – based on Cam’s instructions. She has lots of stereotypical assumptions.
The boy comes up in the search. Dylan Krane. The boy is an honor student. He disappeared 3 weeks ago with his girlfriend Kelly Morris, who is in the foster system.
The parents are brought to the Jeffersonian. They want to see Dylan. But Temperance has to explain that she works on bodies too decomposed to be identified.
Dylan’s parents didn’t want him going out with Kelly. She was a foster kid and he was going to MIT. More prejudice. So a foster kid can’t be a good kid just because they’ve been misfortunate in their birth?
Temperance is quite upset. The conversation and bias of the parents hurts her because she was a foster child. Did people think the worst of her too?
The foster mother says Dylan was a good kid, and good for Kelly. And for her little brother Alex. The foster mother did find them sexually active, and she forbade it (it could get Kelly in trouble with the system), but that could be a motive for runaways. Dylan and Kelly have been with this foster mom for about a year, and she sounds like a good woman, but she has diabetes and says Kelly is a handful. That could mean the kids might get separated in the system. And that is another motive.
Kelly’s younger brother Alex comes in. He’s very worried and upset that Dylan is dead and his sister, with whom he is very close, has not contacted him.
Booth does not have a read on Kelly yet, whether she was good or bad. Doesn’t know yet what to assume. But he does have assumptions on the boy. That he has a hero complex, rescuing the damsel in distress. Kinda peeves Temperance with that, because that assumes something of Kelly. And of foster kids.
The body had nail polish in some gouges. From sex or murder? Likely murder. It was found that he was hit on the head with a rusty pipe and the nail polish was in the wound, so that doesn’t look good for Kelly.
Temperance decides that they need to go find the crime scene before people keep assuming Kelly did it just because she was a foster kid. Good scene.
Zack has some news about the body. It appears that Dylan fell from a distance of about 5 floors, but was unconscious when he went down.
The impact suggests a 2 inch diameter object was the murder weapon. That, with the rust = pipe. Although Temperance was a little pissy that Zack made it sound like an unscientific assumption (her previous annoyance with Cam coming in)
The flower in Dylan’s hand was a rosebud. Hodgins sifted through all 2 tonnes of garbage and, based on its contents, decides the garbage originated near a Russian restaurant.
Booth and Bones go to the neighborhood. Bones decides to go up to the teenagers to ask about Dylan and Kelly. Booth is skeptical that the teens will cooperate, but Temperance is doing a good job. Not. The teens played her for five bucks.
Next is the scene from the spoiler. Booth sees what he thinks is a drug deal, and pulls out his gun. Temperance goes and "does the looking" to see what went down. Aspirin, vitamins, food and condoms. Yep, lots of drugs there. More assumptions.
Booth and Brennan talk to the good Samaritans anyway. They are pissed because now the kids won’t trust them for a while. But they do know Dylan and Kelly. Who have not been around for a couple of weeks. They say "warehouse". As if they know where they might be.
The warehouse is a squat. Old plumbing factory. Pipes?
There is a shrine set up. Something street kids do when someone dies. And there is a Romeo and Juliet book there. Dylan and Kelly fancied themselves Rome & Juliet. Inside, the inscription: "To my Juliet from your Romeo. Love Dylan". They want to check the scene for blood.
Someone pops out and starts running. he’s wearing Dylan’s jacket. Temperance runs after him (in those shoes!) and takes him down. Then he spits in her face.
Now they are asking questions of the kid, who calls himself "C", but is Carter (first or last?). He says he doesn’t know any Dylan. And won’t say where he got the jacket. He’s a foster kid. Has a list of tattooed foster homes on his arm where he’d been kicked out. Instant bond with Brennan, who recognizes his marks as a foster kid.
Carter says to go check out this perv guy, who makes the sandwiches.
Bones and Booth back at the FBI office. Booth asking Bones what she wants to do. She says she should consult Cam, sarcastically, but he asks her what she wants. She says they should look at all the evidence, etc.
Temperance apparently wrote her ‘list’ on the bottom of her shoe. And then Booth says that foster kids feel lost in the world, and they have control issues, can’t let themselves off the hook, can’t trust, etc. Temperance is getting pissy, since what he’s saying about "Kelly" is really what he’s saying about her.
Hodgins back in the lab. Looking at samples and Angela’s mapped schematic of the pipes at the warehouse.
"It’s a strange place for two people in love to end up." – Angela
"What, a forensic lab?" – Hodgins
Angela was talking about the warehouse, but Hodgins thought she was talking about Cam and Booth. Or some other couple or to-be couple
Foot in mouth.
Booth is questioning the guy who makes the sandwiches, Kevin Duncan, the perv. He has a past. Girls who admitted that he was forcing them to trade sex for sandwiches.
Angela and Cam bonding over their first loves. It’s a cute scene. But there’s Temperance in the back fuming. Cam wants Hodgins to be on the pipe, and Temperance wants her to work on the rose.
"I can’t work like this" – Temperance
"Does that mean I should begin looking for a replacement?" – Cam
Then Angela steps in and says that if Brennan goes, so does the rest of the team, Booth included. So Cam defers to her on this one. But says she will start to search for her replacement.
Alex comes in to see Booth. Says Kelly called him. That she is ok and they’ll be together soon. Didn’t say where she was. That she knew Dylan was dead and was crying a lot. Then hung up. Alex says he thinks Kelly was lying and that she’s never coming back. He cries and hugs Booth because he feels alone now.
Booth promises that now that he knows Kelly is alive, he will find her.
Booth came in. Cam called him. Kevin Duncan (the perv), in the autopsy room. Shot. Zack is in. He’s quite grossed out. Most bodies he sees don’t really look like bodies anymore.
Cam says, "If Dr. Brennan were to quit…", Booth says the whole team of ’squints’ would flee. But he would do as he’s ordered (aha, and where do loyalties sit, hey?), although Cam does not believe him.
"What if I were to fire her, what would you do?" – Cam
"I’m with Bones, Cam, all the way. Don’t doubt it for a second" – Booth
English Rose. The ‘rose by any other name’ that Shakespeare wrote about. Only found in one bottanical garden.
Booth asks what if Cam got off onto the wrong foot with this one because Temperance is a foster kid. Shock. Cam didn’t know. So she probably feels like an idiot now.
Hodgins and Booth go to the garden. And there is Kelly. Hodgins goes up to her, since he looks less Cop-y. She wants to run, but doesn’t. Booth asks if she was there…
"Was I there? Who do you think killed him?" – Kelly
Booth questioning Kelly. She admits to killing Dylan. He broke a promise. Tossed her a couple hundred bucks and said he was going to college. She admits to pushing him out the window, said he screamed. Then says she went away. But he was unconscious. Hit with a pipe. And then wrapped and a rose placed lovingly in his hand.
Booth says that the sandwich guy, Kevin Duncan, is dead. She admits to killing him too. "Fine, I killed him too". Convincing.
The sandwich woman (wife of the perv) mother finds Booth and Brennan and asks about Kelly. Then confesses to the murder of his husband. That he used her, and her charity, to get close to young girls. Poor woman. And Temperance says thank you quietly, because to Tempe, it’s justice.
So, Kelly lied about killing Kevin Duncan, now what about Dylan?
Did Kelly kill Dylan? They decide to recreate the scene. Too complicated for play by play, but basically after a couple of versions, they decide there were 3 parties: Kelly, Dylan and the murderer, who they assume to be Kevin Duncan. Kevin hit Dylan from behind and pushes him, Kelly reaches out to save Dylan and thus transfers nail polish, so Kevin is probably the killer.
So, why would Kelly admit to the murder? Booth says there are only two people in the world she would cover for, and one went out the window. Uh oh, the brother.
Brennan talks to Kelly. She is the obvious person to reach her. Kelly still admits to killing. Then Temperance talks about Dylan. About how her made her feel and how he was good to Alex and said he would always be with her. That she would run away with Dylan and the really nice foster mom, Susanne, would be fine taking care of just Alex. So it would all be good. Alex would stay in a good home.
Kelly cries. It was true. She didn’t tell Alex because he would think Dylan was taking Kelly away from him forever. And that’s exactly what happened. So she blames herself, not Alex. Basically confessing that it was Alex who killed Dylan.
"The weight of the world is not on your shoulders." – Temperance
This is a recycling of what Booth said earlier about foster kids. But it’s a good truth here that hits home with Kelly.
Now we have a moving scene of Kelly hugging Alex, saying "I’m sorry" and that she didn’t tell. They just knew. Alex says he’s sorry about Dylan. Then they take Alex away. The poor kids.
So, it’s a story of love. Of the Romeo and Juliet that were not to be. And the love of a brother and sister who don’t want to be torn apart in the foster system.
Angela at her computer. And Hodgins comes in looking all manly and sexy and places the white rose on her desk, then smiles and leaves silently. What a nice way to say you’re interested!
"You were right about the pipe"- Temperance
"You were right about the rose" – Cam
"We have a problem" – Temperance
Cam asks if there is a solution. Temperance says it’s not her fault, completely. She was a foster child. And Booth says foster kids have control issues and the weight of the world, meaning that if she’s going to share responsibility for the cases, she needs to learn to stop controlling everything. Cam says not everyone’s brain works as fast as Temperance’s. That she’s in charge, but she has a "get out of jail free card" she can use, to defy Cam. The agree on 3 per week
Brennan knows that Booth told Cam. And that he’s going to figure that out the second he sees them both together with their new truce.
"He reads people the way that you read pathology reports or I read bones" – Temperance of Booth
"I know, I hate him. Well, you know, not really" – Cam
Pan out. What an interesting ending. Two women "Not really hating" Booth.

What was the great song, and by whom, played at the end of “The Boy in the Shroud,” 9/13/06? Sounded kind of Patty Griffinesque. Anyone know?
Not yet, but I will find out for tomorrow!
Apparently, Remix of Susan Enan’s “Bring on the Wonder” featuring backup lyrics by Sarah McLachlan via (http://community.livejournal.com/bones_theseries/)
I too was intrigued by the song at end of episode. Any idea where to get either the original or remixed version? Thanks
Today, I found Bring On The Wonder as free download at http://www.numberonemusic.com. You have to go through their listener signup process, I live in US, so don’t know about other locales. It’s not the Sarah McLachlan remix, but pretty and unusual nonetheless.
Cool! Thanks for sharing!
There was a great quote when Cam was talking to Booth about firing Brennan. Something about his loyalty always being with Bones. I think you need to get that in there.
Otherwise, this was another great recap!
Arg, I know. I was totally wrapped up writing the previous sentence and it just flew past me. I just finished getting the video ready to watch it again. Will add here, but also grab for my favorite scenes video mixer
Updated
Monte – Maybe I’m just extremely blonde but I logged into the “numberonemusic” and I can listen to the song, but I can’t figure out how to download it…please help! I love this song…And if anyone can find the version with Sarah, please let us know!!!
Thanks…
Anyone know where to download this??
